Alabama's state sales tax on groceries is a cruel tax on survival. This tax drives struggling people deeper into poverty and makes it harder for families to make ends meet, particularly in these times of rising food prices.
Please take a minute TODAY to urge your state senator to untax groceries by voting YES on SB 43 by Sen. Andrew Jones. Alabama is one of only three states with no tax break on groceries. The state grocery tax is 4%, equivalent to two weeks’ worth of groceries each year. Ending this tax would benefit millions of people across our state.
Lawmakers can and should untax groceries quickly and responsibly. That means replacing education revenue from the grocery tax in a way that doesn’t harm struggling families. Jones’ bill would untax groceries and still protect education funding by capping the state income tax deduction for federal income taxes (FIT). The FIT deduction is a skewed tax loophole that overwhelmingly benefits rich households.
You can help end the tax on groceries and protect public schools by calling your state senator today and asking them to vote YES on SB 43.
