The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 answers a question Alabama policymakers have been asking for years: How can we pay for Medicaid expansion? It’s a solution that lawmakers should embrace immediately to build a better, healthier future for our state. An incentive in the new federal COVID-19 relief package means Medicaid expansion in Alabama effectively would pay for itself. Medicaid expansion would bring peace of mind to more than 340,000 adults with low incomes who are uninsured or struggling to afford health coverage. It also would save lives, create jobs and help protect rural hospitals across our state. The single biggest step our leaders can take to bridge Alabama’s health care gap and accelerate our economic recovery is to expand Medicaid. The new federal incentive removes the last hurdle in our way. It’s time to expand Medicaid now.

The loss of eight rural hospitals in the last decade has left us less prepared to deal with the current crisis. The ongoing pandemic really underscores the need for strong local health care. We simply can't afford to lose more hospitals. The projected $252 million surplus in the 2022 Medicaid budget offers us a lifeline: It’s enough to cover the upfront cost of Medicaid expansion. Medicaid expansion is one of the best tools you can use to protect Alabamians during this crisis. Even before the pandemic, more than 223,000 Alabamians were uninsured. Research shows that uninsured individuals wait longer to seek medical attention when they are sick. How will these individuals afford health care to protect themselves, and others? Expanding Medicaid in Alabama can help those who are putting their health on the line every day during this pandemic. People who work in grocery stores and pharmacies, home health workers in nursing homes, and front office staff at hospitals and health clinics are often uninsured. Please use your authority to make it easier for people who lose their job or become ill with COVID-19 to find quality health coverage by expanding Medicaid.
