Every Alabamian deserves safe, adequate and affordable housing. Our state’s Landlord-Tenant Act helps ensure many Alabamians have decent housing for themselves and their families. But the Landlord-Tenant Act is under attack, and we need your help to defend it
SB 242, sponsored by Sen. Keith Kelley, R-Anniston, would remove all restrictions on the amount of the deposit that landlords can charge to renters. The Senate could vote on SB 242 this week.
Your senator needs to hear from you that they should oppose SB 242.
Current state law limits the amount of a security deposit to the amount of a full month’s rent. But SB 242 would remove that limit and allow landlords to charge potentially unlimited deposits to renters instead. This bill could drastically increase the financial burden on Alabamians who are renting their homes.
The harms would hit particularly hard on people with incomes below the area median income. Alabamians have to work 90 hours weekly to afford a two-bedroom rental at minimum wage. Piling on additional upfront costs would put affordable housing even further out of reach for tens of thousands of people across our state.
Housing is already expensive for far too many Alabamians. Allowing landlords to charge renters potentially thousands of additional dollars in deposits would make that problem even worse. SB 242 would be a step in the wrong direction for Alabama.
