The Alabama House Judiciary Committee will consider Sen. Linda Coleman-Madison’s SB 6 and SB 220 this Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Please take a moment to urge your representative to support both of these bills.
SB 6 would make it easier for people to regain the right to vote after completing their sentence. And SB 220 would make sentencing reforms consistent by applying the same rules for counting time to every person serving time for a parole violation.
Your senator serves on the committee and needs to hear from you that they should support SB 6 and SB 220.
Every Alabamian deserves to participate in the democratic process. But our state’s voting rights laws disenfranchise thousands of people, often just because they can’t afford to pay money they owe after a conviction.
SB 6 would increase participation in democracy by removing the requirement that a person repay all fines and fees to regain the right to vote after reentering society. While this bill wouldn’t completely fix the state’s practice of disenfranchising voters, it would allow thousands of Alabamians who are on payment plans or community service obligations to regain their voting rights. SB 6 would remove direct financial obligations as a complete bar to democratic participation.
SB 220 would apply the current practice of counting time served for certain parole violations retroactively. This time reduction now does not apply to convictions that occurred prior to this change in sentence calculation. SB 220 would be a step toward standardized sentencing and parole procedures for people serving time in state prisons after a parole violation.
Please email your state rep before Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and ask them to support SB 6 and SB 220.
